All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Sunset Memorial Gardens--Lawton OK Becker Funeral Home Obit 30 Dec 2005 MSG (Retired) Herschel Lee Vessels Age 87, Lawton - Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday at the Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. SGT Vessels died Friday in a local care center. Entombment with full military honors will be in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born August 10, 1918 in Hillsboro, Texas to Nera and James Vessels. He married Peg Yang on March 20, 1972 in Lawton. He served in the United States Army from 1940 until 1962, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He worked at Jiffy Food Stores (Double L., Inc.) as a district manager from 1962 until 1983. He was a proud veteran of WWII. He deployed to Africa and fought from Tunisia through Italy, France, and Germany including the Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, and Rhineland campaigns. He received the Good Conduct Medal with Silver clasps with one loop, the American Defense Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars and one Arrowhead, the WWII Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal-Germany, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button for WWII. He was a member of numerous veterans’ organizations including the 2d Forward Observation Battalion Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the VFW’s Military Order of the Cooties, the American Legion, the American Legion’s Forty and Eight Society, and AMVETS. He owned and operated Peg’s Package Store for 25 years in Lawton. Survivors include his wife, of the home, seven children: Shirley and husband Colonel Robert Bridgford, Honolulu, Hawaii, Etta Foster, Lawton, William Howard and his wife Carri, Edmond, Jimmy Vessels and his wife Velma, Mesquite, Texas, Jackie Vessels, Colbert, Oklahoma, Linda and her husband Fred Tax, Fairfax City, Virginia, Stephen Vessels and his wife Terri, Van Alstyne, Texas, one brother; Kenneth Vessels and his wife Clarice, Mead, OK, one sister Edna and her husband Robert Rorie, Mead, OK, thirteen grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Edwin, Travis, Stinson, and Arthur Vessels, and a granddaughter: Harper Howard.
