Mitchell WALTERS -- Funeral for J.P. Mitchell, 71, Walters, is pending with Hart- Wyatt Funeral Home, Walters. Mr. Mitchell died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, in Lawton. ======== Lawton Consitituion 11 Oct 2004 J.P. Mitchell Funeral for J.P. Mitchell, 71, Walters, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Chapel, Walters. Mr. Mitchell died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004 in Lawton. Burial will be at Walters Cemetery. He was born Feb. 4, 1933, near Eldorado to Roy and Lois Williams Mitchell. He attended Eldorado High School until September 1950. At age 15, he joined the Oklahoma National Guard at Altus. When Oklahoma's 45th Infantry Division mobilized for the Korean War in 1950, he left school to stay with his guard unit, and he served with the 245th Tank Battalion until his discharge in July 1952. On April 5, 1953, he married Alva Joy Downs at Crowell, Texas. He worked in Oklahoma City and attended OCU until November 1957, when he moved to Walters. He was employed by American Bakeries/Taystee Division, and Mead's Bakery as a route salesman for 22 years. In 1980, he began contract pumping in the oil patch of Cotton County, working for several companies. He retired in August 1997. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons: Jay Anthony and his wife, Cheryle, Norman; and Gary Don, Walters; a daughter, Karen Denise McCoy and her husband, Jim, Lawton; four grandchildren: Jana Mitchell, Denton, Texas; and Austin McCoy, Cassandra Mitchell and Katrina Mitchell, all of Lawton; a great-granddaughter, Marley Colbert, Denton, Texas; five sisters: Klyda Ellingwood and her husband, Doug, Altus; Verdell Tigert, Duke; Joyce Walling, Duncan; Rita Belcher and her husband, Jay, Dallas; and Leanna Marshall and her husband, Harvey, Hobart; six nephews; and two nieces.
