Ruth "Tops" Smith Pehrson was born in Walters, Oklahoma, on November 21, 1922, and passed away in Eureka, California, at Seaview Healthcare Center on December 5, 2007. She got her nickname from her father when she was very young and from then on she was known as "Tops". Tops was a long-time resident of Orick, California. She was best known for owning and operating the Snack Shack in Orick. She grilled up some of the best burgers in the county. She loved to crochet and spent many winters making special items for her family. She adored her grandchildren and would have loved to get to know her great-grandchildren. Tops had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make everyone laugh. Tops was preceded in death by her first husband, Edwin William Smith and most recently, Robert Pehrson. Tops is survived by her sons, Terry Smith, Michael Smith, and Stan (Sue) Smith; and daughter, Sherry (Dale) Romanini. She is survived by nine grandchildren, Larry Smith, Lance (Johanna) Smith, Tyler (Malou) Smith, Todd Smith, Tara (Andy) Hug, Emily Smith, Matthew Smith, Chanel Romanini and Caryn Romanini. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Cole Smith, Kaia Smith, Jaxon Raney and Mika Smith. Furthermore, she leaves behind special family members, Minnie and Ray Miller, Maurya Smith and Barbara Smith, and all her long-time friends in Orick. A visitation will be held at Pierce Mortuary, 707 H Street, Eureka, on Friday December 7th from 3pm - 8pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday December 8th at Pierce Mortuary at 1:00 p.m., with graveside services immediately following at Ocean View Cemetery. There will be a reception following the services at the Eureka Elks Lodge, 445 Herrick Avenue, Eureka, California. The family wishes to send a special thank you out to the staff of Seaview Healthcare Center for all the special care, kindness, and loving attention they provided Mom over the past few years. A special thank you also, to the staff of Hospice of Humboldt for their loving care, assistance, kindness, and support during her last few years. Memorial contributions maybe sent to Hospice of Humboldt, 2010 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, California 95501. Arrangements are under the care Paul's Chapel of Arcata.
