Scharf, who joined the WACs in World War II and spent the remainder of her life a dedicated volunteer to the American Legion, died Oct. 2 after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was 73. Scharf, who lived in Petaluma for 51 years, was born in Temple, Okla. She put in two years with the Women's Army Corps, which sent her to the Presidio in San Francisco. After her two-year enlistment was over she immediately took a civilian job at Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato, where she met her husband, John Scharf, a carpenter. Married in 1949, the couple settled in Petaluma. She continued to work at Hamilton until her only son was born in 1958. Scharf was an active volunteer with the the American Legion Post 28 of Petaluma, and did clerical work in the real estate business for several years. "She was a great cook and she made her own clothes, and my cowboy shirts. She was a great seamstress and she made many many afghans," her husband recalled. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church at Fifth and D streets in Petaluma.
