No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., in Amarillo. Mr. Allmon was born in Pittsburg, Kan., to William and Nellie Allmon. He married Glessie Donnelly in Pittsburg. Mr. Allmon was a "Penney" man for more than 36 years. Beginning in the small northeast Oklahoma community of Vinta, Mr. Allmon steadily moved up the ladder within the J.C. Penney organization. By 1949, he was working in New York City, where he worked in the main office with James Cash (J.C.) Penney, founder of the famous chain of stores. They remained close friends until Mr. Penney's death. Mr. Allmon retired from Penney's in Rapid City, S.D., in 1969, when he ran for mayor of the city. The only break in Mr. Allmon's managerial rise was for a tour of duty with the Army during World War II. He received an honorable discharge. As mayor, Mr. Allmon felt a strong compulsion to serve his community and state. He was always active in Rotary and served as Rotary District 561 Governor in 1966. He also served in the Family Service Organization, the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Improvement Association of Rapid City. Mr. Allmon also served the Rapid City Cancer Society, the United Fund, the Boy Scouts and his church. In the fall of 1971, Gov. Dick Kneip named Mr. Allmon the director of the state highway department. He resigned as mayor and commuted from Rapid City to Pierre, S.D., for the next six years. By 1974, Gov. Kneip named Mr. Allmon the secretary of tourism and economic development. In 1978, Mr. Allmon became the executive vice president of United National Bank and was finally able to stay in Rapid City until his retirement in 1983, when he and his wife moved to Rancho Bernardo, Calif. In 1998, he and his wife moved to Claude to be close to Glessie's sister, Betty McGowan. Jack loved to play golf and continued to play into his 80s. His cremains will be scattered in the Pacific Ocean. Survivors include his wife and a son, Jack Allmon Jr. of Eagan, Minn. The family suggests memorials be to Armstrong County Museum, P.O. Box 450, Claude, TX 79019.
