BECK WICHITA, Kan.-Former Vinita resident, Hazel R. Beck, passed away at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kan., Sat. morning Feb. 15, 2003 after a short illness. Mrs. Beck was born in Harrisonville, MO. on Sept. 24, 1913. Her parents were Orlando and Mary Wagner Phelps. At an early age she moved to the Chetopa, Kan. area with her parents. After losing her mother at the age of four, she was reared by her grandparents, John and Clara Wagner. She attended school in the Chetopa, Kan. area. In 1930, in Chetopa she became the wife of Robert Lee Smith. Later she married Thomas Beck, Jr. in 1952. He preceded her in death in Jan. 1982. After rearing her children, Mrs. Beck returned to school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse and was employed at the Eastern State Hospital until her retirement in 1976. After retirement she enjoyed reading, quilting, antiqueing, working crossword puzzles, and being with her family and friends. A fine Christian woman, Mrs. Beck was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Chetopa. Mrs. Beck is predeceased by her parents, two infant brothers, one half brother, on half sister, husband, one son-Robert Dean Smith, two daughters-Barbara Sue Smith and Shirley Jean Hoffman, two grandsons, and one great-grandson. She is lovingly survived by two sons, Don Smith of Independence, Kan., and Warren Smith of Florence, Kan.; two daughters, Beverly Wickham of Norman, Okla., and Vivian Remignton of Grove; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and many other loving relatives and dear friends. A graveside service for Mrs. Beck will be held at the Oakhill Cemetery in Chetopa, Kan., at 2:00 p.m., Tues. , Feb. 18. Reverend Clarence Newman will officiate. The body will lie in state at the Thomas Funeral Home in Welch. Condolences may be sent to the family through the funeral home.
