Clinton C. Giyer was born in Vinita, Oklahoma, on March 15, 1919. He and his family raised livestock and made molasses. He left Oklahoma to work in the Tennessee lead and zinc mines when he was 17. Seeing that there was no future in doing the type of work that a mule would turn its head away from, he left and moved to San Diego and started his 55 year career as a welder. He passed the Hart welding certification when he was 25 and began to work in the San Francisco shipyards. Later he would go to Hanford, WA to work on the Atomic bomb project, and do similar work in Oakridge, TN. Feeling homesick and looking for a place in California that would remind him of Oklahoma, he settled down in Bakersfield, CA. He married at 31 to Audrey C. Taverner and started a family. Clinton was a self employed welder who took great satisfaction in doing the job right. He worked at the Tosco refinery for 27 of his 55 year career. He would always say that if you do not have any money then you are poor, but if you cannot keep your word then you have nothing. He was a proud man who believed that a person should always do what was right. If a person did not know what the right thing was, he would be happy to tell them. He was proud to work with the union and felt this country was built by the welder and there should be a statue made to show that. With the loss of his wife and his only daughter in the last 12 months, it made it very difficult for even a strong man as Clinton to keep going. He lived long enough to see his first grandson's wedding. "He was my hero when I was a boy. I used to call him Pipi. I am proud to say I know how to weld. I will miss him very much. He will be missed by many. Take care grandfather." Visitation will begin Sunday, June 10th, from 2-8:00 p.m., at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel.
