Loyd Raymond Bruce , 86, of Tulsa, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2006. He was born in Bristow, OK, on December 8, 1920, to parents, James Franklin and Rosa Lindsay Bruce. His father homesteaded in Oklahoma prior to statehood and participated in the 1889 Land Run. As a young man, "Brucie", was a drover in many cattle drives and worked as an oilfield roustabout. After attending OU, he married his high school sweetheart. As a pioneer aviator and air traffic controller, he served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. Following the war, Bruce continued his career in air traffic control serving over 30 years with the Federal Aviation Administration at the Tulsa International Airport. Brucie was the first of three generations to attend the University of Oklahoma; he was an avid OU supporter, proud Scotsman and his family was always his highest priority and his greatest treasure. He enjoyed Thanksgiving 2006 with his entire family and his sparkling eye and razor wit will be sorely missed by all that knew him. Loyd is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Dorotha Lou "Punkin"; daughter, Nancy Hawkins and her husband, John; son, Robert Bruce and his wife, Jan; grandchildren, Scott and Nicole Hawkins and their daughter, Payton of Menlo Park, CA, Chris and Maria Hawkins and their son, Ethan and daughter, Anna of San Diego, CA., Laura Hawkins of Tulsa, Banks Bruce and his fiance, Genniva Nichols of New York City, Patrick Bruce of Tulsa, and Elizabeth Bruce of Tulsa. Friends and family may make donations to First United Methodist Church, 1115 S. Boulder, where a memorial fund has been established in Loyd's name. A Memorial service celebrating Loyd's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at First United Methodist Church. Under the direction of Freeman Harris Funeral Homes, 749-3333.
