Memorial service: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Worth. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund in Merve's name at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3401 Bellaire Drive South, Fort Worth, Texas 76109, or a charity of choice. "Merve," as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, was known for his charm, contagious smile and wonderful sense of humor. He was an inspiration, generous to a fault and always expressed a positive attitude. He never met a stranger! As a loving husband and devoted father, he was the best role-model possible, having successfully raised his children to follow in his footsteps of integrity, honesty and love. He was born in 1926 in Sapulpa, Okla., to Roberta and Merwyn Croston. Merve grew up in Tulsa, Okla., became an Eagle Scout, lettered in track and graduated from Central High in Tulsa in 1945. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army on the hospital ship USS Comfort. He attended Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, and graduated as a member of the Sigma Chapter of Sigma Tau with a bachelor of architecture in 1951. In 1952, Merve married his college sweetheart, Nancy Cox, and they moved to Fort Worth. Merve built his reputation as an architect and became a partner in Parker/Croston Associates. Major projects in which he was involved include the Fort Worth Library, Fort Worth City Jail, TCC South Campus (formerly TCJC), John Peter Smith Hospital, Broadway Plaza, Fine Arts Building at UT Arlington, Western Texas College Campus, Forum at Memorial Wood in Houston and the Forum at Park Lane in Dallas. Merve was also an active participant in AIA, serving as president and receiving the James R. Wooten Service Award in 1997. Merve was preceded in death by his parents, Merwyn and Roberta Croston, and his brother, George. Survivors: His loving wife of 54 years, Nancy; his children, Claire Ward and husband, Ken, Diane Ward and husband, Jim, Merwyn Croston III and wife, Vickie, and Leslie Westland and husband, Bob; brother, Robert Croston of Dallas; sister, Ina Vrooman of Tulsa, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
