Giddens, 82, of Oklahoma City died Oct. 12 at his home. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Putnam City Baptist Church, 11401 N. Rockwell Ave. in Oklahoma City. Burial will follow at the Rose Hill Burial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Mercer-Adams Funeral Service of Oklahoma City. Mr. Giddens was born Jan. 18, 1921, in California but was raised in Oilton by his father and mother, T.J. and Lydia Giddens. He was the youngest of five children. He left Oilton High School, the family farm and a six-year newspaper route in 1939 to attend and play basketball for Central State College in Edmond. His college time was put on hold to serve in the U.S. Navy in ship campaigns in the Atlantic Ocean and South Pacific during World War II. After returning, he graduated from Central State and obtained a master’s degree in education from Oklahoma State University. After coaching Marland to a girls’ state basketball championship in 1950, he served as superintendent for the Marland, Morrison and Wakita public schools for a total of 18 years. He later moved on to the Oklahoma State Department of Education, where he served in various capacities, including assistant state superintendent of the Instruction Division and state director of the North Central Accrediting Association before retiring in 1986. He was an active member of the Putnam City Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Walter, and sisters, Faye Boston and Ruby Hancock. He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Iris Darlene (Phillips) Giddens of the home; two sons, Dr. Jimmy D. and Brigid Giddens of Tulsa and Jared D. and Aleta Giddens of Norman; a sister, Marie and Rolla Mikeman of Cushing; seven grandchildren, including Madison Giddens of Norman; two great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, including Amy Huddleston of Norman; and many other family members. Memorials are suggested to the PCBC Building Fund, 11401 N.
