Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2007, at 9:00 a.m., at Church of God Evening Light Saints, 100 Oswell Street with Interment to directly follow in Union Cemetery, Bakersfield, California. Eddie Robert Johnson was the youngest son of Israel and Beatrice Johnson, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a cousin, and a man of God was born on January 10, 1936, in Creek County, Oklahoma. In the late thirties and early forties, his family moved to Bakersfield, CA. He attended the local elementary schools, and continuing his education at Kern County Union High School, graduating in 1955. After graduation, he started working with his Uncle Ulysses Norling hauling hay. Dreaming of a better way of life, he continued his education at Bakersfield College. During this time he met the "girl of his dreams," Clarisse Bowers and became employed by the City of Bakersfield for 30 years. Later, he married Clarisse. To this union five children were born. He had an extraordinary love for his family, especially his wife. She was his pride and joy. He always wanted to be sure that she was nurtured, taken care of and loved. He also had a special love and concern for his children, grandchildren, and extended family. As a young man, Eddie accepted the Lord and became a member of the Bakersfield Church of God under the leadership of his uncle, the late Elder I.C. Chandler. After marriage, Eddie became serious about his relationship with God. He rededicated his life to Christ, serving as a minister, as treasurer of the maintenance fund, a member of the Board of Directors, and a Sunday School teacher. He was affiliated with the Minister Alliance. He always enjoyed being involved with the young people, often encouraging and giving them words of advice. After retiring, he again worked with children as a part-time crossing guard with the Bakersfield City School District. He equally enjoyed being in the company of the older saints seeking out their tried and proved wisdom for himself. This faithful man of God was always willing and eager to serve at any given time. Elder Johnson was ordained as an elder in the Bakersfield congregation of the Church of God after his long and dedicated service in the ministry. It was evident to many that the Lord had endowed him with the gift of healing. Elder Johnson faithfully ministered to the saints in Los Angeles, California every month. Eddie was greatly concerned about the safety, education and the improvement in the African American community. His concern prompted action; he was a member of the Community Improvement for Better Education Program Committee, whose members worked together for a plan that would safely and successfully integrate the schools of the Bakersfield City School District. Recognizing schools to be truly institutions of learning, the home and school must work together. He served as president of the Bessie Owens P.T.A. for two terms. Eddie was also on the Board of Directors for the Learning Circle a summer enrichment program staffed by volunteers from the community and teacher from Fremont School Staff. He was currently on the board of directors for the Sherman Group Homes. Elder Eddie Robert Johnson will be greatly missed by his family, his church, his neighbors, his friends and his community. His parents, Israel and Beatrice Johnson; and only brother, Ederson Johnson preceded him in death. Eddie leaves to cherish precious memories, his loving and devoted wife, Clarisse Johnson; three daughters, Rofreca Carter, Denise Johnson and Makeba Johnson of Bakersfield, CA; two sons, Stephon Johnson and daughter- in-law, Katherine Johnson of Inglewood, CA, and Kevin Johnson of Bakersfield, CA; sixteen grandchildren, Lealla Davis, Venisha Carter, Ashley Carter, Vanell Carter Jr., Lynece Johnson, Lariah Eddington, Sundae Johnson, Martika Johnson, Devrick Johnson, Kevin C.
