Owen Services: Thurs., May 1, 3 p.m. Geneva B. Owen was born on March 17, 1918, in Cushing, Oklahoma, to parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Richardson, where she was raised in a farming family. She had 5 brothers and one sister, all deceased. Geneva raised one son, Harold F. Zimmerman and one nephew, Donald L. Richardson, who is also deceased. Geneva graduated from Cushing High School in Oklahoma. After high school, she relocated to California in 1937. In 1938, she married Otto Zimmerman and they resided on their ranch near Wasco, CA. Later, in 1940, they owned and operated the Shafter Motel. In 1951, Geneva worked in Shafter in a bakery, owned by Robert Owen. There she excelled in creating beautiful roses in icing. She used this natural talent later when she learned oil painting. After Robert was recalled back to military service in 1952, as a pilot, the bakery was dissolved. Geneva married Robert Owen in the Naval Chapel in Pensacola, Florida, in June 1952. In 1972, they moved from Anaheim, CA, to Bakersfield where they opened the Art Shop, a downtown studio and gallery, where they both taught oil painting for 30 years. Geneva has impressed many, many students over the years with her seemingly effortless, natural skill at creating renditions of roses and other florals. Geneva has enjoyed over the years the challenges of raising several beagles. Geneva also enjoyed reading, sewing, homemaking and watching the Anaheim Angels baseball games. The memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 1, 3:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, at 1705 17th Street, Bakersfield. There will be a private gravesite service at Memorial Park, in Shafter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Creek County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/creek/creek.htm
