Services will be at 10 a.m. July 12 at McFarlin Memorial United Memorial Methodist Church in Norman. Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman is handling arrangements. Mrs. Robinson was born June 8, 1907, in Bristow, to Alvin and Frances Senter. She lived in Bristow until 1937. She graduated from Bristow High School in 1925 and immediately accepted her first teaching job in what become a 47-year career in public education. Her first assignment was with an independent school district just outside of Bristow. She taught grades 3-5 in a three-teacher country school. Within a year her district was annexed by Bristow. She then taught third grade for 12 years. In the late 1920s she began working on her college degree during summer sessions at Central State Teachers College in Edmond. She graduated with a B.A. in education in 1934. She married James Leslie Robinson Dec. 18, 1937, and they moved to Tahlequah. In Tahlequah, Mrs. Robinson was an educator for 16 years. She taught in the school system during the war years but was forced to give up her job to returning veterans after the war. She eventually took a position in a three-teacher, three-room country school near Tahlequah where she taught grades 1-3. Many of her students spoke only Cherokee and needed to learn English as their second language. Early in World War II, the Robinsons spent time at Army base, Scott Field in Illinois. They returned to Tahlequah in 1943 when Mrs. Robinson was expecting her first child, James Richard. Their second son, David, was born in 1944. They moved to Norman in 1953. Mrs. Robinson was a teacher in Midwest City for two years before joining Norman Public Schools. She taught first grade at Wilson Elementary School for eight years. The Robinsons moved to Edwardsville, Ill., in 1964. Mrs. Robinson taught third grade in a nearby school district. She worked for the Glen Carbon School District for eight years until retiring from teaching in 1972. The Robinsons moved to Norman in 1975 for their retirement years. Mrs. Robinson was an avid community volunteer in Norman into her 90s. She was a volunteer with McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, the Cleveland County Retired Teachers Association, the Salvation Army, Norman Regional Hospital, her PEO chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Fraternity, Junior League programs and other organizations. Mrs. Robinson was preceded in death by her husband, James (Jim) Robinson. Mrs. Robinson is survived by her sister, Virginia Buford of Richmond, Texas; sons, James Richard Robinson of Springfield, Va., and J. David Robinson of Leesburg, Va.; grandchildren, Michael and Hadley Robinson; and great-grandchildren, Zachary and Rachael Robinson.
