All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Bakersfield Californian Gus Stevens Jr Services: Friday, Aug. 17, 1 p.m. Gus Stevens Jr., Sunrise on May 7, 1925 in Creek County, Oklahoma to Gus and Bettie Stephens, who preceded him in death. Gus came to California at a very early age seeking a better life. He arrived in Stockton, California and starting working in the agriculture industry. In 1940 he relocated to Delano, Calif., continuing to work in the agricultural. During this time he met his love of his life, Rosalee Barrice. On August 16, 1943, they were joined in marriage and to this union was born five children. To pursue a better life for his family, Gus ventured out and purchased his first commercial truck in 1944. He did not have a formal education but through his hard work, dedication, and the love of trucking, he was blessed to become one of San Joaquin Valley's first black trucking company owners. Gus strived to make his name to be known as a honest, humble, and caring businessman. For the next thirty one years, he continued to be blessed with growth and success which led him to have special business relationships, one being William Bolthouse Farms located in Bakersfield, CA. In 1977, Gus became less active in the working force and eventually retired in 1979 which now his son, Rick Stevens continues the business. During his retirement, Gus enjoyed fishing, boating, and camping with his family and friends until his health failed. Gus Stevens Jr. departed this life for a better one on August 13, 2001. He leaves to cherish his memories is his devoted loving wife of fifty-eight years, Rosalee Stevens; three daughters, Dorothy Lucas of Delano, CA, Ingrid Farinas of Bay Point, CA, Sheila Stevens (deceased); two sons, Leon Stevens of Delano, CA, Rick Stevens of Bakersfield, CA; one sister, Lena Mae Jones (Sikes) of McFarland, CA; one deceased brother, Leon Stevens of Oakland, CA; fifteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Gus was a very special man who touched the lives of many. He will be missed more deeply than words can express. Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001 from 12 noon 7 p.m. at Delano Mortuary. Funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 17, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Delano Mortuary.
