All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::Okmulgee Cemetery--Okmulgee OK Hazel Murphey Thorman passed from this life on Sunday, October 22, 2006 in Okmulgee at the age of 93. She was born Friday, September 5, 1913 at Slick, Oklahoma, the second daughter of Howard and Gertrude Murphy. The family moved to Leonard, Oklahoma in 1916 and in 1919, they moved to Morris. Hazel attended Evening Star Elementary School from 1919 to 1925 and completed high school at Morris at the age of 15. She attended East Central State University at Ada, Oklahoma where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. She taught school at Mason in Okfuskee County to begin a career which lasted twenty years. She also taught at Liberty, Evening Star and Morris Schools in Okmulgee County before completing her career with eight years as second grade teacher at Emerson Elementary School in Okmulgee. In June 1951, she married Ben Thorman of Okmulgee and he preceded her in death in 1990. Hazel was a member of the First Christian Church where she was an active member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and had served as President of that group. She was a life member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Oklahoma Education Association, Okmulgee County Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association, the American Association of University Women and was active in garden club work for several years. Survivors include her nephew, Thomas Payne and wife, Wanda of Tulsa; grand nephews; Steven and Marty Payne and grandniece, Susan Payne-Hart of Tulsa; stepson, Ben Thorman, Jr. of Okmulgee and stepdaughter; Fae Mitchell of Tulsa. Also, she is survived by five step grandsons, David Bennett, Mark Bennett, Ben Thorman III, Ross Thorman and Randy Thorman, and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 26, 2006 at the Shurden- Kelley Funeral Home Chapel with Charlie Green officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of the Shurden-Kelley Funeral Home of Okmulgee. Pallbearers will be Steve Payne, Martin Payne, Randy Thorman, Ben Thorman III, Joey Magrini and Robbie Magrini. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mark and David Bennett. Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the chapel.
