Hocker ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Surnames: Moffat, Estes, Nichols Cyrus Moffat was the son of James and Ellen Moffat. He was the third son of a family of six children. He was born near Amboy, in the county of Lee, state of Illinois, on the 17th day of March 1851. His death occurred at his home in Thomas, {Custer County, Oklahoma} at 8 o’clock Dec. 19, 1934, at the ripe old age of 83 years, 9 months and 2 days. He grew to manhood in his native state, but at the age of 21 he came west with the family of his parents, settling at Allison in the state of Iowa. It was there he was united in marriage to Helen Nichols of Madison, Wisconsin on Dec. 26 1873. His wife preceded him in death, passing away on Jan. 21, 1921. To this union six children were born, two sons and four daughters. One son and two daughters preceded their father in death, Marcy, Frank, and Lizzie, passing away in 1906, 1918, and 1931, respectively. Those living are Mrs. Grace Delaney and Mrs. Maude Estes of Thomas and Frank and Willard of Colorado. After living in Iowa for a number of years, Mr. Moffat moved to Nebraska and later to Oklahoma where he lived on a farm near Thomas, Oklahoma. In 1920 he moved back to Nebraska, and later returned to Oklahoma, residing in Thomas till the time of his passing away. While he resided in Nebraska he gave his heart to his Savior and became a member of the Congregational Church. He continued in the fellowship of that church till he came to Oklahoma when he became a member of the Presbyterian Church. After that church gave up its work in Thomas, he being liberal mind in brother hood and fellowship worshipped with the people of God wherever the opportunity offered. He continued steadfast in the faith of his Savior till the end. Besides the three children already mentioned, he leaves to mourn his departure, one sister, Mrs. Eliza Youtzey, of Allison, Iowa, eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. One of his grandsons, the oldest one Leonard {Lennard} Estes, was the constant companion of his grandfather through his latter days and was a great comfort and help to him. There are also many other relatives and friends who are grieved at his taking away, as the ripened grain in the shock his four score and three years were soon passed by reason of strength, yet he was soon cut off and flew away, and hence it is true, "We spend our years as a tale that is told." The funeral service was held at the Baptist Church in Thomas on Thursday afternoon at 2 P.M. The Rev. Alspaugh of the M.E. {Methodist-Episcopal} Church leading the services, assisted by Reverends Wright , Evans, William and Dearing. The remains were laid to rest in the Mound Valley cemetery by the side of his companion who had preceded him in death by almost 14 years. This is a three page, hand-written document discovered amongst papers of Ruby Ellen Estes Sisk, granddaughter of Cyrus Moffat. It may have been what was submitted for a newspaper obituary. The identity of the author of the document is not known. Transcribed 03/12/2000 04/29/2000 It was later discovered that Eliza, the sister of Cyrus, married George YOUTZY, not Youtzey.
