Metcalf Dead Just as The Herald goes to Press with the last run, it learns the sad news of the death of E.F. Metcalf, who passed on Thursday Afternoon, at age about 86 years He was an honored citizen of the Town and county. We join all in Extending sympathy to relatives. BUTLER HERALD BUTLER, OKLAHOMA September 26, 1929 E.F. Metcalf Laid to Rest Funeral services for E.F. Metcalf who passed away Thursday afternoon Sept. 19 were held at the family home Friday at 2 p.m. by Rev. J.W. Newman in the presence of a large number of bereaved friends and relatives. The remains were laid to rest in the Butler Cemetery. All the children were present. A part of the service was made doubly impressive by the reading of Mr. Metcalf’s favorite song which was done at his request. “The Lifeboat” was the name of the hymn, and it was so old the printed words could not be found, but the children had remembered the words and the verses were written and the old favorite was read by Rev. Newman. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, given in memory of one dearly loved by their givers. The services were impressive and were carried out by the good wife and children with the thought in mind of following the wishes of one they so reverently beloved. E.F. Metcalf was a model type of citizen and a pioneer of the town and county, Having homesteaded the home place in Butler in 1901. Many old timers will remember when the deceased constructed a Blacksmith shop in Old Butler. He is gone from us on earth. We miss him but get much consolation in knowing he discharged all his duties well upon this earth. Peace, sweet peace to his soul. The magnitude of friends extend sympathy to the widow and children in their time of sorrow. Hen let us all take courage, our trials will soon be over; with loved ones we shall meet, shall meet upon that golden shore. We’re pilgrims and we’re strangers here, we’re seeking that city to come; the lifeboat soon is coming to gather the jewels home. The lifeboat soon is coming by, the Isle of faith I see, as she sweeps by the aters deep to rescue you and me. To land us safely through the port with friends we love so dear; “Get ready”. Cries the Captain, Oh! Look! She’s almost here Sometimes we feel it’s all in vain for us to lead a Christian life and walk in Jesus name. And then we hear our Savior say I’ll lend a helping hand, and if you will only trust in Me, I’ll lead you to the end. Then, cheer, my brother, Cheer! Cheer! Cheer! Our trials will soon be o’er, and with loved ones we shall meet, shall meet upon that golden shore. ---------------------- Card of Thanks We wish to thank our kind friends and neighbors for your kindness and wonderful floral offerings, during the illness and death of our dear husband and father, and may God’s blessings rest on you and all.
