All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::Fairland Cemetery--Fairland OK The Grove Sun Daily ALICE HUFFAKER HUGGINS GROVE, Okla. - The Flower Lady Alice Huffaker Huggins passed away at age 89; Alice Huggins went to meet the Lord on September 22, 2005, the day after she turned 89. She had been in Grand Lake Villa and hospital care for several months. Alice is the mother of Charles Huggins and wife Nancy and their daughter Kathy all of Broken Arrow; he son Mickey Huggins lived with her at their home north of Sailboat Bridge; one son Eddie Huggins preceded her in death at age 59 in the year 2000. Alice was the daughter of Roy Rubin and Bessie Huffaker and the oldest of eight children that survived to adulthood. Alice was born near Holly, Colorado near the Kansas state line. The family homesteaded on the prairie and lived in a dugout sod house for years. The winters were harsh and at age 13, Alice was stranded for 36 hours on a school bus lost in a snow blizzard. Three children and the bus driver froze to death during the Towner Bus Tragedy. Included in the 16 survivors were Alice's brother Charlie Huffaker, sister Lena Huffaker, Nelson Brock and Laura Huffaker Loehr and two first cousins. The family moved to the Hickory Grove area north of Sailboat Bridge in 1939. All of Alice's brothers and sisters have preceded her in death except; her sister Laura Loehr, who lives in Fairland and raised a large family of 5 children, Archie, Leila, Allen, Peggy and Shirley. Her brother Robert Huffaker and wife Wilma live in Florence, Alabama where Robert was a pastor and teacher until he retired. Sister Lena Nelson lived at the Huffaker farm west of Tomcat corner until her death a couple of years ago. She was the mother of Denny Nelson and wife Kathleen of Virginia and Judy Nelson Stogsdill and husband Dorvin of Skiatook. There are many more relatives of the Huffaker families, but these children grew up in this area. Brothers Max, Carl and Charlie preceded her in death; as did sisters Lena and Gladys. Surviving are a sister in-law, Shasta Anker and husband Richard of Los Angeles, sister in-law Darlene Huffaker of Amarillo, and brother in-law H. L. Brock of Afton; 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Alice married Edgar Joe Huggins on May 29, 1940 and he preceded her in death on December 26, 1966. Alice raised three sons; Eddie graduated from Grove High School and was Grove's first All-State Football Player. Eddie had been elementary principal at Afton and taught Math at Grove Elementary until his death. Charlie taught Math in Grove for 3 years until he served in the Vietnam War. Charlie taught Math at Union High School in Tulsa and at Tulsa Junior College. Charlie was also a programmer for Texas Instruments, McDonnell Douglas and Phillips Petroleum before returning to teaching at Ponca City and retiring from teaching Computer Machining at Tulsa Technology Center. Son Mickey lives at the Huggins home place where he was a great help to his mother with her beautiful flower gardens. Alice was blessed with six grandchildren; Heather and husband Johnny Nelson, of Oklahoma City, Heather's mother is Linda Poyner of Grove. Heather made All State Jazz Band in Piano 2 years in Grove's Band. Michael and wife Stephanie live in Grove. Michael is an Eagle Scout. He was a 911 dispatcher for Grove Police and Administrator for Delaware/Ottawa Drug Courts for several years before his teaching career as a computer teacher for Grove High School this year. Stephanie works for the City of Grove and they have a 15-month-old son KABE. Eddie's children, Brad Huggins made All State Band and was the Drum Major for Grove's Marching Band. He was an Eagle Scout. He and wife Megan live in Dallas. Kristy and and husband Barry live in Zena and have two daughters Harley and Kayla. Kristy was All State as a Grove Ridgerunner Basketball Player; son Jonathan lives in Grove. Alice was a founding member of the Hickory Grove Homemakers Demonstration Club. She had been a member of the Hickory Grove Community Association serving as President, Secretary and all other offices. She attended the Hickory Grove Sunday School and was a Pianist for many years. She was a member of the Eastern. She worked for years as a seamstress at Burlington's in Miami and Glen Berry's in Commerce. She managed the Huggins Hall Country Dance Hall for years after Edgar's death. She was best known for her lovely flower garden where she spent hours. Her rewards were many Blue Ribbons at the County Fair and the admiration of every one who traveled east of Tom Cat Corner on Hickory Grove Road. The Funeral service for Alice Huggins will be held Sunday, September 25, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hickory Grove Community Center. Interment will follow at the Fairland Cemetery.
