The Grove Sun Daily 1950-2005 John Sixkiller, Jr. passed from this life Wednesday, October 5, 2005 in Colcord at 54 years of age. He was born October 19, 1950 in Colcord to John and Leona (Sapsucker) Sixkiller. John grew up in Colcord and attended Oaks grade school and graduated from Anadarko High School. John served his country in the US Navy during Vietnam. He then worked as a welder, photographer and as an optician at Hastings Hospital before enrolling in NSU where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. He spent the latter part of the 1990's living in Marshall, MO managing an apartment complex. For the past five years, John has been teaching the Cherokee Language. Recently, he has been working for the Cherokee Nation and Northeast Tech Center. John created the Sixkiller Eye Chart which is the Cherokee Alphabet Distance Acuity Chart. It was accepted by the American Optometric association and was shown in the October 1990 edition of their Journal. The Sixkiller Eye Chart is used in most of North America's Indian Hospitals. It is displayed at the Smithsonian Institute. John was its sole designer. John was an active Native American advocate and self taught photographer and guitarist. He also taught himself to play the banjo, fiddle and harmonica. John was an avid reader, military historian, cyclist and fisherman. John was preceded in death by his parents, John Sixkiller and Leona (Sapsucker) Sixkiller-Presley; and a sister, Cherri Mae (Sixkiller) Sellers. He is survived by 2 sisters, Sara Jane (Sixkiller) Clemmer of Choctaw and Myrtle Sue (Sixkiller) Wildcat of Gore; a brother, John A. Parker of Colcord; 4 nieces, Stacy Sellers, Lisa Marlene Cooley, Nita Jo James and Waleah Ruth Clemmer-Copeland; a nephew, Terry Sellers; several great nieces and great nephews; and many extended relatives and friends. Graveside Services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 8, 2005 at Greenleaf Cemetery with Rev. L.B. Wildcat officiating. Pallbearers include Sam Bass, Keith Cooley, John Kerr, Jr. Henry Sapp, Woody Henson and Dennis Sixkiller.
