Smothers 1926 -2005 GROVE, Okla. - Mildred J. Smothers, 78, died Fri., March 11 at St. John’s Medical Center in Joplin, Mo. Mildred June Smothers was born on May 22, 1926 in Garber, Okla. to James G. and Mirian (Dunlavy) Proffitt. She was a secretary for Jenks Public Schools and also worked for schools in Saudi Arabia and Morocco. Mildred loved to spend time with her family, enjoyed water skiing on Grand Lake, traveling, exploring, doing crafts and listening to music. Survivors include her husband, Hugh; her children, Becke Kidwell of Grove, Neal Smothers of Mandiville, La., Peggy Smothers of Ruidoso, N.M. and Sunni Coombs of Bentonville, Ark.; one sister, Maurine Grahm of Sapulpa, Okla.; one brother, James Proffitt of Florida; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tues., March 15 at First United Methodist Church, Grove, with Rev. Randy Hamill officiating. Interment will follow at Zena Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Recreation Center equipment.
