AND MRS. JABEZ STRATTON, COVINGTON MARRIED 77 YEARS: Covington, March 23--These young whipper-snappers who make a big too-do of their 50th or 60th wedding anniversaries -- it's all right, of course. But for traveling in double harness, they don't hold a candle to Mr. and Mrs. Jabez Stratton. The Strattons, who live on a farm six miles east of Covington, probably have difficulty remembering when they weren't man and wife. They've been married 77 years, the wedding having taken place on March 11, 1877 at Hettick, Illinois. Mr. Stratton, who was 98 last October 12, has been in ill health for the past four years and is bedfast now. But his hearing and eyesight are good and he still has a fine sense of humor. Before her marriage, Mrs. Stratton was Miss Amanda C. Dunn. She was 94 on her last birthday, November 2. Mrs. Stratton was a good cook and housekeeper until the past 2 and a half years, but now is forced to spend much of her time in bed. She can still get around, but is hard of hearing and is handicapped further by poor eyesight. There was no big celebration of their 77th anniversary, but all of their five children were present for the occasion. The couple has lived 42 years in their present home, where they moved from Illinois. Now retired, Mr. Stratton has been a farmer all his life. The sons and daughters are Charles O. Stratton, Girard, Ill., Ida May (Mrs. Louis) Dunn of Fairmont, William Aret Stratton, who lives with his parents, John Henry Stratton, Sanger California, and Raymond Stratton, Hayward. One son Earnest, died June 31,1892. Ten of the couple's 13 grandchildren are living, and there are 19 great-grandchildren and one great=great-grandchild.
