Over Five Thousand Dollars Worth of Property Destroyed Enid, O.T., Feb. 27—This city was visited by a disastrous fire yesterday morning, which seriously threatened a large portion of the city's business section. As it is the loss will reach nearly $6,000. The fire was started from a lighted match igniting some oil that had overflowed in filling a lantern. The fire caught in A.B. Carroll's large feed barn on block 32, fronting north on West Cherokee avenue, one of the largest barns in the city, covering ???? feet all frame. The flames spread rapidly, making it almost impossible to save much of the contents of the barn. Eight horses and a young cow were consumed in the flames also a half dozen buggies, and spring wagons. About $100 worth of feed went up in smoke. Three men who had teams in the barn and were sleeping in the loft, succeeded in getting their horses out of the flames. The young man in charge of the barn cut the horses loose but could not get them out. Five wooden buildings were consumed; the Carrol barn, Free Homes restaurant building, the Fairgrieve residence, Pfeifer blacksmith shop and the Ortman bake Home. The loss is estimated at $5,600, divided as follows: A.B. Carroll, $3,100, insurance $560; George Fairgrieve, $500; Mrs. Garten, $200; E.G. Sample, $285; Pfeifer $250; other people aggregated $755. Earl G. Sample, a traveling picture frame dealer, lost his wagon, stock of goods and team in the barn, loss $285. Three of the horses burned belonged to Mr. Carroll, the others to outside parties. Numerous wagons, implements and other truck adjacent to the fire were consumed. The fire ladies were alert and reached the fire in its infancy, but, as usual, the fires were low under the boilers at the works and it was at least ten minutes before a fire pressure could be steamed up. The boys did good work applying two streams, one on the east approach of the fire and the other on the northwest, centering at Ortman's bakery. Outside of $650 insurance carried on the barn and restaurant buildings the result of the fire is a total loss; none of the other suffers carried any insurance. Published in The Oklahoman, August 14, 1902 Robbed Slot Machines. Enid, O.T., Aug 13. – Deputy Sheriff Clint Clarke, came in this morning from Watonga with a prisoner named Kirby who is charged with robbing Iddings' saloon at Kremlin, by breaking open a slot machine and extracting $49 therefrom. The harsh game on the slot machine was played last Thursday while the proprietor of the saloon was attending the republican county convention in this city. Kirby was a bartender of the place and he was left in charge. It seems that he took in a partner and together they pried open the machine and secured about $49. Kirby skipped out before the robbery was discovered and his partner squealed on him. He was arraigned before Judge Shoemaker this afternoon. He asked for time to consider whether he would waive examination or stand for a preliminary examination. He was given until 3 o'clock this afternoon. He waived examination. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Garfield County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/garfield/garfield.html
