All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ENID NEWS & EAGLE 22 Feb 2002 WILLIS DUNKLEBERGER NASH --- A graveside service for Willis Dunkleberger, 78, will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Hawley Cemetery, north of Nash. The Rev. Gary Lillie and Dr. Gary McCormick will officiate. The F ort Sill honors team will present military rites. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek. He was born Sept. 14, 1923, near Nash to Earl B. and Laudia Humphreys Dunkleberger and died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Integris Bass Pavillion, Enid. He grew up in the Gore community, graduating from Gore Consolidated School. He farmed in the Hawley and Gore area. He was a corporal in Company A 179th Division volunteering on Nov. 19, 1943. He began his combat service in North Africa and was among the first American soldiers to invade southern France on D-Day, Aug. 15, 1944. He was wounded and taken prisoner of war Oct. 12, 1944, and held at Stalog VII A, just outside of Numich, Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1946 from Kennedy General Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. in 1946. He received the Purple Heart. He married Jane Eshelman Aug. 16, 1954, in Enid. They made their home in Wichita where he was a Boeing Aircraft supervisor. They returned to Enid in 1969. He was a member of Bethel Hawley Baptist Church and Disabled American Veterans. Surviving are his wife, Jane of Enid; one son, Mike Dunkleberger of Ponca City; two daughters, Becky McCormick of Katy, Texas, and Beth Dunkleberger of Conroe, Texas; one brother, Robert Dunkleberger of Mulvane, Kan.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers and one sister.
