His home remained in Kirksville until after the war of the great rebellion. Mr. Hanks enlisted in the home guards under Col. David Moore, father of John C. Moore of this city, and later when the home guards were disbanded, enlisted in the 3rd Missouri Cavalry of the Union Army and served three years. At the end of the war he returned to Kirksville and in 1871 removed with his family to Harvey county, Kansas. In 1889 he came to Oak Grove, Oklahoma and in 1893 made the run into the Cherokee Strip and has resided in Enid since that time. In 1892 he became a member of the Salvation Army and during his early days in Enid, he was a prominent figure either carrying the flag or beating the drum at the nightly meetings of the army, and it has been only lately since he has been to inform to attend regularly that he has not been present at all of the meetings of the army.
