He first came to San Francisco for an internship at St. Luke's in 1950 and returned in 1960 to begin a successful private practice that continued until his retirement in 1992. A resident of Nob Hill, Fred was a fixture at Harris Restaurant, the Big Four and the Balboa Café where he enjoyed excellent meals, good friends and fine gin. Fred was a man of impeccable taste who reveled in the rich cultural life of San Francisco. He enjoyed music, antiquing and travel, especially to London where he attended the races at Ascot on several occasions. Active in many San Francisco charities, Fred served on the board of the San Francisco Opera, the Salvation Army's Harbor Lights program and the board of trustees of Grace Cathedral. He was a proud member of the Society of California Pioneers, the Fang and Claw Club and the Sovereign Miltary Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta. As the founder and director of STOP NOW, Inc., a critical care alcoholism treatment program at the old Presbyterian Hospital in San Francisco, Fred began a long interest in alcohol addiction treatment and assisted many alcoholics into recovery. As one alcoholic wrote, "he made me think getting sober was my own idea." Fred took him to Harbor Lights and was so impressed by the program, he later joined the board of directors. Dr. Hudson was an alumnus of Kemper Military School, Carleton College and the University of Oklahoma Medical School. He was the son of Dr. Frederick Auld and Grace Elizabeth Goltry Hudson and is preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Hudson Chambers. Fred is survived by his adopted son, C.L. "Jack" Bell of San Francisco and will be missed by his large circle of friends and acquaintances.
