Dorothy J. Vertreese

Dorothy J. Vertreese, 87, of Amarillo died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002.

Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. today in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors,
Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St.
Mary's Catholic Church with the Right Rev. LeRoy Matthiesen, retired Bishop,
and Monsignor Francis Smyer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery.

Mrs. Vertreese was a registered nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital and was a
member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was born Feb. 2, 1915, to Romeo
and Mary Ellen Sweet in St. Joseph, Mo. They moved to Wildorado in 1917.

She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1933 and St. Anthony's Hospital,
school of nursing in 1938. She married John O. Vertreese on April 17, 1942.
She was a head nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital for 30 years.

She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of St.
Cecelia's Altar Society. She was loved by the rest of her extended family and
many friends here in Amarillo and Enid, Okla.

She was greatly loved by the staff of the Methodist Nursing Home in Enid
where she spent the last year and a half receiving tender loving care along with
excellent medical and nursing care. We, the children, are grateful and thankful
to them for each and every kindness that was given to our mother.

Survivors include three daughters, Joanne Sweet and husband, Mike Naples,
Honey Jane and husband, Dr. Dan Washburn, and Mary Jeanne and husband,
Rick Ayala; a son, John W. "Bill" Vertreese and wife, Karen; and
grandchildren, Tiffany and Christian Mark Schupp, Liz and John Washburn,
Ashley and Aimee Vertreese, Justin "Young Buck" and wife, Lisa, and Jeff
"Python" and Amanda "Butterfly." 

The family will be at 1404 W. 12th Ave. in Amarillo.
