All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::NOT LISTED A Celebration of life for Bessie Elizabeth Lyghts Arterberry- Wherry, 98, passed into glory on November 1, 2008 surrounded by those she loved. Bessie was born in Wynnewood, Oklahoma on January 27, 1910, to the late Simon and Mattie Hildrege Lyghts. Affectionately known as Aunt Bessie and Mama Bessie, she spent part of her youth in Texas, then moved to Oklahoma, during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930's. In 1934, Mama Bessie, then engaged to the love of her life, Mr. Leslie Arterberry, moved with him to Hair's Camp in Buttonwillow, California, where they both found housing and work. She was loved, respected and recognized as an icon in her community, and shared her love of the area by hosting foreign guests from countries including India, Nigeria, and Australia. Mama Bessie lived a full life and traveled the world. In the 1970s she visited Nigeria in Africa, and in March 2008 she spent three weeks in Egypt, Jordan and Israel, accompanied by her daughters, Marilyn and Sheila, granddaughters, Lesly and Jillian, and spiritual daughter, Renea McMillon. She leaves to cherish her legacy 2 daughters: Marilyn Arterberry Hallman and Sheila Arterberry (John) Howlett. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 8th, at 10:00 a.m., at Cross Road Christian Fellowship Church, 2500 Fairfax Rd., Bakersfield. A viewing and visitation is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 7, from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., with a meditation/wake from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., at Beloved Care Funeral Services, 115 18th Street.
