Hudson was born to Henry Hudson (Coodles) and Mary Thelma Bennett Cummings on March 31, 1926, in Tishomingo, Okla. Hudson grew up in Enid, Okla., with his two little sisters, Peggy Allbaugh and Marilyn Davis. After the death of his father, at the tender age of 8, Hudson became the man of the family and the family moved to Blackwell, Okla. Hudson enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on June 27 of 1944, and was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands and the South West Pacific Islands during WWII. He was a rifle expert, 2nd best shot in the Marine Corps, serving as Admiral Halsey's bodyguard. Hudson was honorably discharged, receiving a good-conduct medal, from the Marine Corps on July 2, 1946. After returning to Oklahoma, he attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he studied Animal Husbandry and played defensive lineman for the Oklahoma Sooners. Hudson moved to Montana in 1955, where he was a rodeo cowboy and met his future son-in-law, Jo-Jo Abbott, riding broncs. This is also where he met the love of his life, Concetta "Connie" Alba Bellentoni. Hudson and Connie were married in Butte on June 7, 1957. Hudson and Connie were seldom apart until Connie's death on Feb. 10, 1992. Hudson and Connie had three children, Marilyn Mary Cummings (Molt), Hudson Bennett Cummings Jr. (Molt) and Peggy Nolen Cummings-Oliver (Molt). He also was a stepfather to his two daughters, Margaret (Joe) Abbott (Poplar) and Diane (Darold) Ruff (Billings). Hudson and Connie were also foster parents, opening their home to many children in the Billings community. They adopted Carl Doney. Hudson worked at his trucking business until returning to school in 1970. Hudson went back to school at Eastern Montana College and obtained his bachelor of science degree in 1974. Hudson also achieved his certificate in teaching from the State of Montana and taught high school biology in Lavina, where he also coached the girls' and boys' basketball teams. In 1988, Hudson finally realized his dream of owning a cattle ranch and purchased land in Boyd, where he taught his grandchildren the value of living off the land. Hudson continued his ranching aspirations until finally settling in Molt with his family and livestock. Hudson was an extremely hardworking, highly motivated and generous man. He taught his family the meaning of kindness, strength and love. His passing is an extreme loss to our family and to the world. His gentle-loving soul and strong spirit will always be remembered with every passing day. Pop Pops, we will miss your handsome smile and intelligent baby blue eyes; we know you are at home with Grandma on your cattle ranch in the sky. "See ya all in the funny papers!" Hudson is survived by his five children, Marilyn, Hudson Jr., Peggy, Margaret and Diane; his two sisters, Peggy Allbaugh (Wichita, Kan.) and Marilyn (Larry) Davis (Wichita); his grandchildren, Angelina Marie Cummings (Billings), Matthew James Oliver (Sidney), Carrie Ann Oliver (Billings), Bonnie Jean Satterfield (Molt), Elizabeth Rose Oliver (Helena), Andreia Lauren Oliver (Molt) and Darin Ruff, Danny Ruff, Larry Abbott, Bonnie Abbott and Sissy Abbott; his two great-grandchildren, Rylee Kooyer and Devon Kooyer; nephews, Joe, Jay, John, Drew and Dirk. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law Jo-Jo Abbott, his foster son and his wife. Special thanks to Rocky Mountain Hospice for their wonderful care and support. Funeral services will be held at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel on Friday, April 27, at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Joliet Cemetery. Published in the Billings Gazette on 4/25/2007.
