Hays, 84, of Dora will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 29, 2007 at the Dora Church of Christ with Delbert Bradley and Dr. Steve Eckstein officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with grandsons, Daren Hays, Shanon Hays, Justin Hays, Brandon Hays, Bryce Hays and Brent Hays serving as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to Lubbock Christian University, 5701 W. 19th, Lubbock, TX 79407. L. D. was born September 29, 1922 in Paul's Valley, OK to the home of Annie and Hunter Hays, and died early Tuesday morning, March 27, 2007 in Lubbock. L. D. moved to Dora when he was 13 years old, and graduated from Dora High School in 1941. While in school he played basketball and competed as a calf roper. On January 2, 1942 in Dora, he was married to Pearl McEndree. L. D. ran a dairy until 1979, and continued to farm and ranch just as long as he was able. Mr. Hays was an active member of the Dora Church of Christ, and served as an elder for the congregation for more than 40 years. For several years he served on the board for Roosevelt General Hospital. For many years he served on the board for the ENMU Bible Chair, and was on the board for Lubbock Christian University for more than 30 years. He had also served on both the regional and the national boards for Associated Milk Producers, Inc. (AMPI). L. D. was a member of the Proclaimers quartet for many years, performing at gospel sings, and for funerals and other functions. He could always be counted on by his children and grandchildren to attend their ballgames, and had attended numerous games through the years. He also liked playing dominos with friends at Dora Senior Citizens. Mr. Hays is survived by Pearl, his wife of more than 65 years; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Nell Hays of Lubbock and Barry and Koletta Hays of Dora; 8 grandchildren, Daren (Kristi) Hays, Shanon (Tina) Hays and Justin (Sarah) Hays all of Lubbock, Bandi (Jeff) Christmann of South Lake, TX, Melanie (Jason) Redding of Lubbock, Brandon (Megan) Hays of Brownfield, TX, and Bryce Hays and Brent Hays both of Lubbock; 9 great-granddaughters and 4 great-grandsons; and a brother, Billy (JoAnn) Hays of Dora. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Hunter and Jimmie Hays. Services are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary, 505-356-4455.
