Scifres COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Dr. Charles J. Scifres, 62, of College Station died Monday, July 28, 2003, at his residence. Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hillier Funeral Home, Bryan, Texas, with the Rev. Mike Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be in Restever Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Charles was born June 1, 1941, in Foster to Lloyd and Lois Scifres. He earned his degrees from Oklahoma State University and the University of Nebraska, Ph.D., 1969. He began his post graduate career in 1968 with the Range Science Department of Texas A&M University. Moving through the academic ranks, he was named professor in 1976 and was named the Thomas M. O'Connor Professor of Range Science in 1982. He has authored two books on range improvement and fire ecology. In 1987, he accepted the position of Head of Department of Agronomy at Oklahoma State University. During his tenure, he provided leadership for changing the name of the college in 1995 to "College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences." In 1997, he initiated the Arkansas Consortium for Teaching Agriculture (ACTA). He was active in several professional societies and national committees, as well as one of the founders of the National Alliance for Food Safety. Most current, he was the Associate Vice Chancellor for the Agriculture Program at Texas A&M University. When not teaching or researching, he enjoyed being a collector of guns, coins, knives and rod and reels. He also had a passion for yard work, boating, hunting and wood working. Survivors include his wife Julia Scifres of College Station; a son and daughter-in-law, Dirk and Vickie Scifres of College Station; a daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Thomas Wootton of Belgium; a brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Judy Scifres of Duncan; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Nelda Scifres and Janice and Clint Fowler, all of Duncan; his mother, Lois Scifres of Duncan; and four grandchildren, Andrew Scifres, Savanah Wootton, Matthew Wootton and Autumn Wootton. He is preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Joel Scifres. Memorials may be made to the Texas A&M Foundation; Charles J.
