Garland was at home and surrounded by his loving family. Garland was born April 9, 1930 in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. After studying God's ministry he moved to Bakersfield, and soon met his sweetheart, his wife of 52 years, Melba Jean. While Garland provided for his family as an insurance broker, his true passion was to help others with a holistic approach to health. More profound was Garland's enduring passion and faith in Jesus Christ- Garland was truly the "Lord's Soldier," bringing many friends and family to God. Garland was a member of the Planz Road Church of Christ. Garland never missed an opportunity to spend time with his family, whether it was camping and fishing with his wife and children, or traveling the states to attend each and every family reunion. Garland enjoyed playing Pinochle with his brothers-in-law, while the "lady-folk," his wife and sisters-in-law, kept the kitchen humming. Garland is survived by his wife, Melba; sons Roger of Bakersfield, and Brad and wife, Tina, of Bakersfield; daughters Phyllis Gattian and husband, Jon, of Tehachapi, and Brenda Meyers and husband, Keith, of Denver, Colorado; nine grandchildren Alexandra, Kristen, Rachelle, Andrea, Steven, Rene, Robyn, Justin and Stephanie; brothers Loyd and wife, Dorothy, Ray and wife, Glenda, and Lynn; sisters Laverne Couch and husband, JC, Lavena Salisbury and husband, Chris, Aletha Ketchell and husband, Paul, and Velma Aaron and husband, Jack; and sister-in-law Nancy, wife of the late brother Elvin. Garland is also preceded in death by his mother and father, Oliver and Edna. Family and friends will celebrate Garland's life on Monday, October 2 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ, 2215 Planz Road, officiated by Darrell Brewer, with an interment service immediately following at Greenlawn Southwest, 2739 Panama lane. Lunch reception will be held at Calvary Chapel Westbrook, 6501 Schirra Court. Viewing is Sunday, October 1, 1:00-8:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Southwest and Monday, 8:45-9:45, preceding the service at the Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed by the Planz Road Church of Christ. The family thanks angels Kelly and Optimal Hospice. A very special thank you is extended to Melba's sisters, Maxine and Joyce, for their loving care to both Garland and Melba always and whenever they were in need.
