Mr Louthan and Wilma Erwin were married January 15, 1902 in Chickasha. He states he has written the history or early Minco from the time it was started in 1890 until the railroad build south and opened up Chickasha in 1892. For two and a half years Minco was the terminus of the Rock Island and they were exciting years with some colorful figures like Major Baldwin, Quanah Parker, Cal Suggs, Jack Stillwell and numerous others coming to Minco regularly. Folk living at Fort Sill, Anadarko and at various places in the Kiowa-Comanche and Apache country obtained supplies at Minco. Freighting was done by bull teams, mule teams and Indian wagons. Everyone who came stayed a few days making the floating population larger then the permanent residents. He went to Chickasha in the fall of 1892 when the middle of the town was a swamp crossed by wooden bridges on main street and each store had a different elevation to its sidewalk. He went to Chicago in 1905 and returned for the 1907 statehood election to help his brother Mart be elected Grady County's first sheriff. Mr Louthan now lives at 1032 SW 30th, Oklahoma City Archivist note: Mr Woodworth is looking for the book on the history of Minco that is referenced in article. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Grady County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/grady/grady.html
