The cemetery, located southwest of Rush Springs, was vandalized by an, as yet, unknown group of persons either the night of June 20 or early morning June 21. Grady County Sheriff's Deputy Capt. Larry Crabb took the initial report on the vandalism. Crabb stated in his report that when he arrived he found one headstone standing in the road and approximately 18 others vandalized in the cemetery. Working on the investigation with Crabb is Sheriff Investigator Terry Alexander. Alexander said the nearby residents he has talked to said they will bring in equipment this week to repair the headstones. Alexander said that while some stone were able to be moved back into place, others were too heavy to repair and will need the assistance of machinery. Investigators are continuing to follow leads to find the culprits. Deputies answered a suspicious persons call in the area of the cemetery Wednesday morning, July 6. Undersheriff Irene Perske said the persons were questioned but the investigation was still ongoing. Anyone with information concerning the Woodlawn Cemetery vandalism should contact either Capt. Crabb or Investigator Alexander through the Grady County Sheriff's Office at 224-0984. GRADYFOOTER
