Middleton Lafayette Askew

Middleton Lafayette Askew, 83, of Amarillo died Sunday, Nov. 10, 
2002.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Christian Church with 
the Rev. James Cobb, senior minister, and the Rev. Marvin James, 
minister of Family Life, officiating. Burial will be in Llano 
Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia 
Circle.

Mr. Askew, known to most as Mid Askew, was born Nov. 17, 1918, in 
Amarillo, to early residents W.A. and Geddes Askew. He graduated 
from Amarillo High School in 1936.

After graduating from West Texas State Teacher's College, he served 
in the Pacific during World War II. He received his juris doctor 
degree from Southern Methodist University in 1949. He married 
Phyllis Johnson on Oct. 14, 1950, in Amarillo.

He joined his father, brother and brother-in-law, J. Hal Brown, in 
partnership at Askew and Brown Realtors, a long-standing Amarillo 
firm, until his retirement in 1971.

He was an active member of Amarillo Junior Chamber of Commerce and 
secretary of the XIT Reunion Committee. Mid served as secretary of 
Rotary Club of Amarillo for 18 of 51 years as a Rotarian. The State 
Bar of Texas honored him for 50 years for his valuable and 
meritorious service.

Mid enjoyed bird hunting with his father, brother, nephews, grandson 
and their buddies. He also loved to share stories of the early days 
of Amarillo, including his memories of his family connections to 
Colonel Goodnight, his visits to the XIT Reunion, and his summer 
childhood visits to Kearns and Marble Falls, his parents' family 
homestead. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; two daughters, Suzy Zimmerman 
of Amarillo and Linda Askew and husband, Scott Mathis, of Denver; a 
brother, W.A. Askew Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Amarillo; two 
grandchildren, Stacey Zimmerman and son, Colton, of Fayetteville, 
Ark., and Mark Zimmerman and wife, Susan, and their son, Cade, of 
Houston; three nieces, Betty Howell and husband, Joe, of Amarillo, 
Carole Erwin and husband, Jim, of Dallas and Barbara Jane Harrell of 
Chickasha, Okla.; and three nephews, John Paul Askew and wife, 
Judith, of Amarillo, Robert Askew and wife, Faye, of Lake City, 
Colo., and Bill Harrell and wife, Marla, of Norman, Okla.

The family suggests memorials be to First Christian Church Endowment 
Fund, 2001 Wolflin Ave., Amarillo, TX 79109; or a favorite charity.
