Beets Funeral service for Margaret (Margie) E. Beets, 81, of Chickasha, Oklahoma, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 15, 2001, in the Chapel of Sevier Funeral Home. Margaret (Margie) E. Beets was born January 25, 1920, in McAlester, Oklahoma, the daughter of Walter T. and Sue Edwards, and died in Chickasha December 13, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Freeman H. Beets, of the home; one daughter, Susan Durant, of Independence, Kentucky; and one sister, Mrs. Melton Sadler, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mrs. Beets was a graduate of Oklahoma College of Women with a Bachelor of Music degree and the University of Oklahoma with a combined Master of Fine Arts degree in music and education. She was well known for her voice, having been a member of the OCW college trio which sang for civic clubs, churches and other organizations throughout the southwest while she was a student at the college. She was also in demand as a soloist at civic clubs, churches, and community programs. She had studied voice with Virginia LaCroix at OCW and with Dame Eva Turner and Gus Lease at the University of Oklahoma. Her professional career embraced teaching over a span of 36 years at all levels of education from two-teacher rural schools to the college level. As a sixth grade teacher she developed a special creative dramatics program while teaching in the Shawnee Mission, Kansas, public schools. She retired from the Shawnee Mission schools in 1982, having taught in Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Missouri and Kansas in addition to having taught voice at Oklahoma College for Women and Oklahoma Baptist University. She moved with her husband to Chickasha in 1984. Mrs. Beets was widely traveled, having visited in numerous foreign countries, and every state of the United States. She was particularly fond of visiting the countries of the Orient, ocean cruises, and African photographic safaris. She was a member of Baptist churches wherever she resided and was sought after as a Sunday School teacher and musician and was a frequent soloist at church. She was also active in the MacDowell Music clubs, having served as president of the Chickasha club; PEO, having served as president of her chapter in Kansas City, Missouri, Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity; Chi Beta Delphian study club; and was a life member of the Oklahoma and National Education Associations. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. Memorials may be designated for the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Foundation for the Margaret Beets Memorial Scholarship fund.
