He had come in on the bus from Allen, (Pontotoc County), Oklahoma, and started to walk to the home of his son-in-law, Steve Russell, 12 miles southwest of Alex but was overcome by the extreme heat which affected his heart. He was in apparently good health when he arrived at the drugstore where he purchased a cold drink. Mr. Bartshe and his wife (Mahala) came here from Calvin, (Hughes County), Oklahoma about a year ago and were living with their daugher, Mrs. Russell. Several weeks ago he decided to go to Calvin to visit his daughter and other relatives and friends, and his family here knew nothing about his returning hence were not in town to meet him. He, no doubt thought it would be easy to catch a ride when on the highway. He was a German by birth, his parents coming to this country from Germany. He settled near Calvin about 35 years ago and had lived there until due to old age, they broke up housekeeping and came to live with their daughter near Alex. But he still longed for his old home and friends and talked of keeping house again. He was just a young man during the Civil War and spent many hours entertaining his friends with stories of war times and the early days in Oklahoma. The funeral Services were held Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. Wagnor of Rush Springs and burial was in Ninnekah cemetery. He leaves his aged widow, five daughters. Mrs. Sallie Russell, and Mrs. Elva Thomas, both of Ninnikuh; Mrs Cora Day, Calvin, Oklahoma and Mrs. Maude O'Kelly and Mrs. Martha O'Kelly, of St. Louis, Oklahoma and one son Bennie of Allen, Oklahoma. 22 grand children and six great grand children. The family are very grateful to the kind friends who rendered aid to their beloved father, which was as a good Samaritan in time of need and ask that the Lord bless all a hundred fold---Alex Paper Alex Tribune adds--- that the remains were removed to the Kilby home where they were prepared for burial and taken to the Russell home that night. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Grady County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/grady/grady.html
