Cole, 94, of Chickasha, will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel, with Robert Dye officiating and Tyler Norvell and Mike Wright assisting. Mattie E. Cole was born March 7, 1909, in Trail. Oklahoma, near Leedey. She was the daughter of L. K. H. Laws and Olive Margaret Eldredge Laws. She died at her home on July 18, 2003, in Chickasha. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to a farm two miles north of Camargo, Oklahoma, where Mattie grew up with three sisters and five brothers. They lived on the farm while the MK & T Railroad was being brought to western Oklahoma. The track ran through their land. All twelve years of her school were at Camargo, graduating in 1927. While in school, Mattie lived with and cared for an elderly lady, Mrs. Wing. Upon graduation, she came to Chickasha where she started working at the Kress Department Store and lived with her brother, Joe Laws, who was the pastor of the Ninth Street Baptist Church. Mattie met Mason Cole while working at Kress and they were married on February 29, 1936, in Chickasha. They have been married sixty-seven wonderful years, but only have been able to celebrate sixteen of those years on the anniversary date, due to being married on a leap year. They made their first home in Chickasha, and Mattie continued working at Kress. In 1940, they moved to Eagle Rock, California, where Mason worked for Lockheed Aircraft as an airplane mechanic. While in California, their daughter, Nancy Mae was born. They returned to Chickasha in 1946 where they have lived since. Mattie accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age and was active in church all of her life. Mattie was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, where she has been a member for seventy-five years. She was the oldest living member of the church. She served in the Preschool Department for forty-seven years and also in the Women's Missionary Union. Mattie was active in her church as long as her health permitted. Mattie was preceded in death by both parents and all of her brothers and sisters. Survivors include her husband, Mason, of the home; one daughter and son- in-law; Nancy and R. W. Norvell, of Amber; three grandchildren and their spouses: Steve and Cheri Norvell, of Amber, Stan and Lanette Norvell, of Verden, Richard and Renee Norvell, of Tuttle; six great grandchildren: Tyler, Julie, and Kyle Norvell of Amber, Lisa and Kayla Edelen of Verden, Chase Carel of Tuttle; one sister-in-law: Peggy Laws of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and many nieces and nephews. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Grady County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/grady/grady.html
