All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== The Chickasha Express-Star 15 February 2005 HARRY STRADER CULVER Harry Strader Culver, (August 19, 1922 - February 13, 2005) was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Harry and Opal Culver. After the death of his mother, he was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Cloa and Arch Strader, who welcomed him and his three sisters, Julien (Reeves), Genevieve (Smith), and Vivien (Boyce) into their home as they were raising their own children, Gertrude (Ewing), Ross, Elizabeth (Cleveland), and Karl Strader. They were all raised as brothers and sisters. He went to school in Homestead, OK, graduating Valedictorian of his class. During World War II he was Captain and Flight Leader as a B-17 pilot with the 92nd Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force in England. He flew 33 combat missions over Germany. He completed his Master's degree in Journalism award. He spent 35 years as a reporter for United Press International, mostly as a legislative and political reporter at the Oklahoma State Capitol. During this period he served as the national president of the Wire Service Guild and served 14 years on the International Executive Board of the Newspaper Guild, including ten years as their Chairperson. He also served 10 years on the Executive Committee of International Federation of Journalists headquartered in Belgium. Subsequently he worked as a public information officer for the office of State Finance. He received many awards in his lifetime and was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 1979. He received the Society of Professional Journalists Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. He is survived by his wife Mattie Lee Culver, a retired school teacher, and piano teacher of Oklahoma City, daughters Linda Slott, and Dr. Peggy Dubois and her husband, Gary, and by a son Reverend David Culver and his wife Alison of Kansas City. Grandchildren include Sarah, Christie, Daniel, and Kathleen Slott; Mario, Becky, Josh, and Jon Dubois; and Evan and Audrey Culver, as well as one great grandchild, McKinsey Slott Wisdom. He is also survived by his two sisters, Vivien Boyce and Genevieve Smith, his brother Pat Culver, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He had many close friends at Grace United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board. A special thanks goes to Willard and Marge Daniels as well as Ed and Jan Perry for their unfailing friendship and support. He was a great man who served his country with honor, who made important contributions to his profession, and who remained committed to his wife, family, and church throughout his lifetime. Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Grace United Methodist Church, 6316 N. Tulsa in OKC. Interment will follow at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery.
