Persons or organizations desiring to use this material for purposes other than stated above must obtain the written consent of the file contributor. ====================================================================== The Verden News October 10, 1930 John Riley Elder was born in Somerset, Kentucky, on January 7, 1849 and passed away October 6, 1930, living a long and useful life of almost 82 years. He often remarked he was living on borrowed time, as the Lord only granted us three score and ten. He served his country in the Civil war, after the war, he went to Missouri where he was united in marriage to Belle S. Pollock on September 23, 1872. To this union eight children were born. His wife and four children and his mother preceded him in death by many years. The three sons are; Fred Elder of St. Joseph, Missouri, Geo. A. Elder of Forest City, Missouri, and John P. Elder, whom he was making his home with, and one daughter, Mrs. J. A. Foster of St. Joseph, Missouri, also fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Elder united with the Christian church when a young man, of which he served faithfully. The funeral services were held at the First Baptist church of Verden Wednesday at 2:00 p. m., with Rev. C. W. Taylor conducting the service assisted by pastor Rev. Stevens. Interment was made in the Verden cemetery. Submitted by Sandi Carter
