All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Monterey City Cemetery--Monterey CA O.W "Smokey" Elder January 18, 1921 ~ November 16, 2006 Pacific Grove – Odis William Elder, well known as "Smokey", died from kidney failure on November 16, 2006 at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. A native of Minco, OK, he was born January 18, 1921 and graduated from Stratford High School, Stratford, TX in 1941. Smokey served in the U.S. Navy from May 5, 1942 until December 24, 1945, reaching the rank of Chief Machinist and was then a Naval Reservist for 15 years. Smokey moved to Salinas in 1946 where he met his wife, Ulabel Middleton. They were married in her hometown, Neligh, NB, on June 6, 1948. The Elders moved to Pacific Grove in 1962 and went into retailing for 11 years in Monterey and 10 years in Carmel. An active community participant, Smokey was twice Master of the Carmel Masonic Lodge and was involved in the Boy Scouts for 25 years including serving as Neighborhood Commissioner. He also belonged to the Moose, Elks and Kiwanis Clubs, the American Legion, the Navy League and was a life member of the VFW. Smokey is survived by his wife Ulabel; his children, Debora Ann Salazar of San Jose and John Robert Elder of Pacific Grove; his grandsons, Matt Elder of Orlando, FL, Stuart Elder of Pacific Grove, Nick Salazar of San Jose and Curtis Salazar of Portland, OR and his great-granddaughters, Leah and Madison. Memorial services will take place at the Pacific Grove Masonic Lodge, 130 Congress, Pacific Grove on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. Following cremation under the direction of The Paul Mortuary, inurnment will be in Monterey City Cemetery. Your thoughts and well wishes are well appreciated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the donor's favorite charity.
