GUILFORD Services for Roger C. Guilford, of Chickasha, a student life counselor, alumnus and longtime friend of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, are scheduled at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Frederick. A career educator, Guilford spent the last 10 years serving on the USAO Alumni Association Board of Directors. After retirement as a teacher and coach in the public schools, Guilford joined the USAO staff last fall with his wife Julie as student life counselors in Sparks Hall. Together they lived and worked on campus, where they had met and married 34 years ago. Services will be led by the Rev. Charlie Graves of the First United Methodist Church of Frederick. Burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Guilford died Sunday morning, July 27, 2003, at the Grady Memorial Hospital in Chickasha of an apparent heart attack. Roger Craig Guilford was born in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 7, 1950, to Bill and Ginny (Davis) Guilford. The family moved to New York in 1960 where Roger attended school through the sixth grade at Great Neck, Long Island. They then moved to Oklahoma City. Roger graduated in 1968 from Putnam City High School where he played saxophone in the school band. Roger graduated from the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts (today known as USAO) in Chickasha in April of 1972. While attending college, he met his wife, Julie Gay Watson. They were married on December 27, 1969. After graduation, they moved to Colorado Springs and then to Frederick in November 1972. Roger was produce manager of United Groceries in Frederick while attaining his teaching certificate at Cameron University. He then joined the Frederick Public Schools and taught various subjects in grades K through 8th. He was golf coach for the Middle School for nine years. He retired in 2002 after 28 years of teaching. Roger loved sports. He played tennis and gold. Roger had a great sense of humor, and he loved to tease. He had an engaging personality, and everyone loved him. He was an excellent teacher, whom all children adored. Roger was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Frederick, Oklahoma. He served on the Administrative Board several years, was Co- Sunday School Superintendent for seventeen years, and was audio/visual technician for ten years. He is survived by his wife: Julie; his son: Nathan of Norman; his daughter: Delaney of Chickasha, his sister: Kathy Bourg and her husband Jim of Plano, Texas, his father: William Guilford of Oklahoma City, two aunts: Margaret O'Connor of Arkansas, and Fran Haag of California; one uncle Robert Davis and his wife Joanne of Florida; a sister-in-law: Milissa Hullender and her husband David; three brothers-in-law: Wade Watson, Newt Watson and his wife Shelley, all of Mineola, Texas and Bob Maxwell of Medicine Park, Oklahoma; and sixteen nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his mother, Ginny Guilford. Memorial contributions may be made to the USAO Alumni Association Scholarship Fund in memory of Roger C.
