H.R. GANDY DIES WHILE ON DUTY Pioneer Resident, Father of Ten Children Was Veteran Peace Officer of City 18 Years H.R. Gandy, resident of this community since 1903, died suddenly about 11 o'clock Tuesday night from a heart attack. Mr. Gandy wsa actinga as a special police at the district fair grounds in the ball park. All of the crowd in attendance at the fair had not left the grounds when Mr. Gandy became ill. An ambulance was called but Mr. Gandy had died before he reached a hospital. This was the second heart attack Mr. Gandy had suffered in recent months. Mrs. Gandy and other members of the family were at the fair grounds when Mr. Gandy died. Horace R. Gandy was born in Meridian in Bosque county, Texas, November 22, 1871. He was 72 years old at the time of his death. He was married to Miss Martha Elizabeth Phipps, November 15, 1895 in Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Gandy moved to Oklahoma and settled near Bailey, east of marlow in 1902. As pioneer settlers of this community, they have had a definite part in the progress of the community and of civic affairs in the city of Marlow. Mr. Gandy served as deputy sheriff in Grady county six years while fe farmed at Bailey. He moved to Marlow in 1913 and became a member of the city police force where he served for 18 years. Since his retirement from the regular police force in 1930, Mr. Gandy has been relief man on the force and died while on duty as officer. He was associated in the Home Bakery in Marlow for 13 years with his son- in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Gandy reared and educated 10 children in Marlow. Survivors are his widow and the 10 children. These are Mrs. Gladys Allen and Roy Gandy of Hobart; Mrs. Leila Martin of healdon, mrs. Ora B. Martin of Vernon, Texas, Elmo Gandy of Anadarko, H.R. Gandy Jr. of Oklahoma City, Misses Jimmie , Billie Dean, and Betty Jo, all of the home address. Four grandchildren and one brother, Tom Gandy of Meridian, Texas,also survive. Mr. Gandy joined the Methodist church at the age of 13 and affiliated with the local Methodist church when he came to Marlow in 1913. In early life he was a regular attendant in Sunday school and retained as one of his most cherished memories his Sunday School in Meridian, Texas and his first Sunday School teacher, who later moved to Marlow also, Mrs. H.A. Falk, now deceased. In lat years, Mr. Gandy's hearing had failed and he was not regular in church attendance. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Methodist church. Rev. O.L. Adams of Mangum, forner Marlow pastor and Rev. Earl Nowlin will conduct the services. Mrs. Ray Cox will play the music incidental to the service and also the accompaniments to two hymns 'Does Jesus Care?' and 'Amazing Grace' which will be sung by Mrs. Clyde Ferguson. Pallbearers will be John Briscoe, John Kent, Brooks Hervey, Charlie McKeeyer, Boyd Lowe, and Mark Black. Burial will be in the Marlow cemetery. The Steele Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Quoting from the obituary prepared for reading 'Those who knew Mr. Gandy were reminded in his everyday life of the motto after which he tried to pattern his life, 'I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday and I live today.'
