Glenn Leon "Bear" Garten was born Sept. 8, 1944, and died on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002. ========== The Chickasha Express-Star 26 December 2002 GLENN LEON "BEAR" GARTEN Memorial service for Glenn Leon "Bear" Garten, age 58, of Chickasha, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 28, 2002, at the McRay Funeral Home Chapel. Glenn Leon "Bear" Garten, the son of Guy William Garten and Marian Trotter Garten, was born September 8, 1944, in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. He died December 22, 2002, at his home in Chickasha. Bear grew up on his family farm in Sun City, Kansas. After high school, he married Mary Conner on May 14, 1956, in Pratt, Kansas. Bear served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. While in Vietnam, he served with the 168th Engineer Combat Battalion 557 LE attached. He served in Operation Junction City in 1967. Bear went from Private First Class to an E5 while serving in the United States Army. He received the National Defense Service Medal, which was a Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After returning home from the service, Bear worked as a heavy equipment operator in commercial construction and the oil field. He continued this work until complications from his war service caused him to retire. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dale Garten. Survivors include: wife, Mary Garten, of the home; son, Terry Garten, of Chickasha; daughter and husband, Glenna and Rick Dennis, of Union City; sister, Bonnie Shaffer, of Aurora, California; sister, Vera Wood, of Sacramento, California; brother, Jim Garten, of Amarillo, Texas; brother, Bobby Garten, of Wichita, Kansas; seven grandchildren: Guy Garten, Amy Garten, Glenn Garten, Timothy Garten, Christopher Dennis, Tiffany Dennis and Emily Dennis; one great grandchild, Colton Dennis.
