M. Garner, one of Verden's pioneer citizens, was stricken with heart trouble Tuesday morning which proved to be a fatal attack. Mr. Garner was down town walking around in his usual way when a sudden attack struck him. He fell to the ground, several of his friends thought he had fainted, but he was carried to the drug store where medical aid was given, and later the doctor was summoned but was unable to get [to] him for at least two hours and it was supposed the end came when the attack struck. Mr. and Mrs. Garner have operated a grocery store here in Verden the past several years until this spring they sold out and had retired to their home here in town. Mr. Garner has been a sufferer of heart trouble a number of years. Mr. Garner was a good man, a man who had many friends. He always was a kind loving husband and father to his family and as a business man gave his customers the truest, courteous treatment, gaining complete confidence and respect of all. The funeral service was held Thursday afternoon at the Baptist church with Rev. Brogan officiating. The interment was made in the Verden Cemetery. All of his children were in attendance at the funeral. His sons, Gus Garner of Olustee, Edgar and Lawrence Garner who reside here also Mrs. Vergia Gill of Spiro, and Lee Dunham and family of Chickasha. The family has the sympathy of the people in their bereavement.
