J. HUGHES Funeral service for E. J. Hughes, 78, of Chickasha, Okla., will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2002, in the Chapel of Sevier Funeral Home. E. H. Hughes was born Feb. 22, 1924, and died on Thursday, April 11, 2002. Services are under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. =============================== The Chickasha Express-Star 12 April 2002 E. J. HUGHES Funeral service for E. J. Hughes, 78, of Chickasha, Oklahoma, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 13, 2002, in the Chapel of Sevier Funeral Home. E. J. Hughes, formerly of Mena, Arkansas, was born February 22, 1924, in Hemingway, South Carolina, the son of Daniel Durant and Evelyn (Dusenberry) Hughes. He died Thursday, April 11, 2002, in Norman, Oklahoma, following an extended illness. Mr. Hughes lived in the Hemingway area until moving to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, at the age of 16. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1941, where he served as a radio operator in the Atlantic Theater until the end of World War II. After the war, Mr. Hughes returned to Murrells Inlet, where he met Audra Mae Altman. They were married on December 20, 1947 and continued to live in South Carolina where Mr. Hughes took a job with International Paper. His career at I. P. advanced rapidly, transferring him to many different I. P. plants in different areas of the country, including Georgetown, South Carolina; Mount Dora, Florida; Auburndale, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Springhill, Louisiana; Baltimore, Maryland; McAllen, Texas; and Murfreesboro, Tennessee. After retiring from I. P. in 1982, E. J. and Mae moved back to Murrells Inlet for three years, then to Mena, Arkansas, for 17 years, where they were active in the First Baptist Church and Mr. Hughes served as a deacon for 9 years. In September of 2001, due to Mr. Hughes' illness, they moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma, to live near family members. Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers, Eddie and Price Hughes. Survivors include: his wife of 54 years, Audra Mae Hughes, of the home; 4 children and their spouses: Anita and David Moydell, of Chickasha, Oklahoma, Dee and Harold Davis, of The Colony, Texas, Candy and Ray Scroggins, of Alvin, Texas, Steve and Ginger Hughes, of Columbia, South Carolina; 1 younger brother, Joe L. Hughes; 7 grandchildren: Rebecca Moydell-Kislow, of Chickasha, Oklahoma, Daniel and Philip Davis, of Denton, Texas, Clinton Shows, of Gladewater, Texas, Lucas Scroggins, of Alvin, Texas, Sydney and Jordan Hughes, of Columbia, South Carolina. Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
