HAYWOOD Charles A. Haywood, 88, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away May 2, 2005 at his home. A celebration of his life was Friday, May 6, 2005 at First Baptist Church, Carlsbad, New Mexico with Pastor Jack Burton of Austin, Texas officiating. Interment was at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Military honors were provided by the Carlsbad Veteran's Honor Guard. Charles A. Haywood was born June 30, 1916 in Cameron, Missouri to Oliver and Minerva Chalfant Haywood. He was raised in the Tuttle area and graduated from Chickasha High School. After World War II he received his masters degree from Northern Colorado University in Greeley, Colorado. He served his country in the US 8th Air Force, 96th Bomb Group during WW II as a tail gunner in a B-17B. Charles was a POW in Europe for 14 months. After his service he taught school for 36 years in Grand Junction, Colorado and in Carlsbad, New Mexico and also golf and tennis at NMSU at Carlsbad. Mr. Haywood enjoyed fishing, golfing, memorizing and reciting poety and summers in Estes Park, Colorado. He was a 50+ years Mason and a long time member of the First Baptist Church. Charles A. Haywood is survived by June Haywood, his wife of 62 years; daughter Cheryl Haywood Fowler and husband Scott, of Las Cruces, NM; granddaughter Jenifer Michelle Bohart and husband Sean of Phoenix, AZ; great granddaughter Sarah Jewel Bohart of Phoenix, AZ; sister Juanita Culver of El Reno, OK; sister-in-law Ruth Haywood, Tuttle; and many nieces and nephews.
