Persons or organizations desiring to use this material for purposes other than stated above must obtain the written consent of the file contributor. ====================================================================== The Verden News April 13, 1934 Duke Wellington Jones, the son of the late James N. and Nellie Jones was born on the old homestead two and a half miles east of Verden; died at his home one mile east of Verden early Thursday morning at the age of 34 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was a veteran of the World War and a member of the Raymond T. Hurst Post of the American Legion. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy on January 15, 1919 and graduated from the U. S. Naval Radio School at Great Lakes, Ill. He became a member of the Methodist church at the age of 16 while attending school at Lawrence, Kansas. Duke was married on February 15, 1930 to Alvera Thoerner of St. Louis, Mo. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, six sisters, Mrs. Maggie Love of Lawrence, Kansas, Mrs. Jessie Dempsey and Mrs. Eva Keppel of Verden, Mrs. Nell Courtney and Ada Bell Jones of Anadarko, and Mrs. Mamie Myatt of Tampa, Fla.; three brothers, Walter of Carnagie, William P. of Oklahoma City and James E. of Chickasha; and Mrs. Caroline Thoerner, mother-in-law, to whom Duke was very devoted and who was making her home with Duke and his wife at the time of his death. Duke also leaves a large host of relatives and friends to mourn his untimely death. Submitted by Sandi Carter
