All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== The Verden News March 7, 1941 William Henry Karnes, pioneer citizen, died Wednesday morning at him home here after a brief illness from bronchial pneumonia. He was 73 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Karnes had recently moved from south of town to the Lamar property, having lived near Verden for 35 years. Mr. Karnes, earlier in life, taught school, but later years had farmed. The funeral services were held at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist church with Rev. Wilkes Spradlin Dean officiating. Mr. Karnes was born April 8, 1867 at Edgar Springs, Missouri. Was married to Minnie M. Davis in 1891 and to this union seven children were born, three of whom preceded him in death. Mr. Karnes was a consecrated Christian and a loving father to his family, having gained highest esteem of all who knew him by his sincere fellowship of brotherly love to all. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Karnes; four daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Cliff, Cement, Mrs. Edith Joycoy, Hobbs, New Mexico; Mrs. Millie Cuniff, Sour Lake, Texas; and Mrs. Grace Akin, Gracemont; one son, Arthur, Verden; one sister, Mrs. Mollie Pliler, Baxter Springs, Kansas; 3 brothers, G. M. Karnes, of Tulare, Calif.; J. E. Karnes, Walnut Ridge, Ark.; Mike Karnes of Verden.
