LaBOON Former Chickasha resident, Van L. LaBoon, 81, passed away suddenly Thursday, August 15, in a Corpus Christi, TX, hospital. Born in Chickasha, he graduated from Chickasha High School in the late 1930s. He was the son of the late Wade H. and Mae Ellen LaBoon. Following his graduation, he served with Oklahoma's 45th Division in Sicily, North Africa and Italy in World War II. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He participated in the first Allied invasion of Sicily and was discharges as a Staff Sergeant in 1945. He attended the University of Oklahoma for a year and later received his Civil Engineering degree from Utah State University. He joined the US Forest Service working in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, the Daniel Boone National Forest, and the George Washington National Forest. After 34 years of service, he retired to Corpus Christi in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and three children: John LaBoon of Littleton, CO, Sue Mowbray of Harrisonburg, VA, and Polly Falcon of Keokok, IA, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He is survived by one brother, Frank LaBoon of Austin, TX, three sisters, Ellen Dee Huntley of Chickasha, Rosamond Miller of Norman, and Maejean McKelvey of Hurst, TX; plus numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Monday, August 19th, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Corpus Christi. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being made to the Paisano Girl Scout Council in Corpus Christi, TX.
