Eileen Layman was born November 23, 1916, in Fredericktown, Missouri, the daughter of Harry H. Smith and Dora Darland Smith. She died June 16, 2003, in Chickasha. Eileen was the oldest of seven children. Her father joined the Merchant Marines when she was about one year old. Eileen grew up mostly in Iowa and Indiana. As the oldest, Eileen has many responsibilities in taking care of younger siblings. Her parents made sure she was always in church, and Eileen grew up knowing that God provides for our daily needs. She was baptized into Christ at the age of eight at Albia, Iowa. During her first two years of high school, her family lived in Indiana. When her family moved back to Iowa in 1932, she enrolled in Cincinnati Bible Seminary to complete her high school education. To help finance her education, Eileen worked in various positions such as maid, housekeeper, and baby sitter. While at C.B.S., she met Lawrence Kysar Layman. They were married on December 21, 1936, at Hessville Christian Church in Hessville, Indiana. Lawrence was preaching part-time at churches in English, KY, Braytown, IN, and Paynesville, IN. Eileen had received her Academy Diploma in the spring of 1935, and then in 1937, graduated from C.B.S. with a Pastor's Assistant Degree. Lawrence and Eileen had very successful ministries at Hebron, IN, Haines City, FL, Garrett, IN, and Ft. Wayne, IN. On October 1, 1940, Mark Roland was born in Hebron. On July 31, 1944, Gary Wayne was born in Garrett. Lawrence and Eileen were always interested in missions, and at each church they served, missions were a part of their outreach in the community and around the world. In 1947, they moved to the Kiamichi Mountains of S. E. Oklahoma to begin a mission work with the people in that area. On October 26, 1949, while living in Muse, OK, Linda Kay was born. In 1960, Lawrence was chosen to serve as co-director of the Kiamichi Mt. Christian Mission, giving general oversight to the Mission. In May of 1976, Lawrence and Eileen resigned their responsibilities with the Kiamichi Mission to give full-time to the work of Artesia Christian College. Lawrence was director of development, and Eileen spent the summer of '76 visiting congregations across the country promoting this new concept of Christian education and raising financial support. In August they moved to Artesia and also became involved with the teaching program of the new college. Eileen was in charge of the college bookstore through the first semester of 1977-78. In August of 1978, they moved to Chickasha, where they have lived except for 3 1/2 years when they were at Cookson Hills Christian Home near Kansas, OK. She was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers, a grandson, Steve Layman, and her husband Lawrence on December 29, 1997. Eileen went to be with The Lord June 16, 2003. She described her life as truly being blessed. Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Janet Layman of Euless, TX, and Gary and Hope Layman of Chickasha; one daughter and son-in-law: Linda and Charles Pickle of Kansas, OK; a sister: Charlene Humphrey of Findley, OK; a sister and brother-in-law: Bonnie and Allen King of Loma Linda, CA; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Bill and Marolyn Smith of Keizer, OR, and Charles and Marilyn Smith of Moorpark, CA; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
